UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman containing several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four separate personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads are. Flowers are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
