Toronto Blue Jays Claim World Series Showdown With defending champion Dodgers

George Springer celebrating

Springer was instrumental for the Houston Astros claiming the championship in 2017.

The Toronto Blue Jays advanced to their initial Fall Classic since the 1993 season by defeating the Mariners in the final seventh game of the American League Championship Series.

Behind by two runs, outfielder George Springer delivered a three-run homer in the seventh inning, propelling the sole Canadian team in MLB to a 4-3 triumph in the best-of-seven series. They will now face the defending champions, the team that is the defending champions, in the forthcoming World Series.

"I'm just so happy for this squad, Toronto, our country," commented Springer, an integral part of the Astros team that won the 2017 championship. "It's truly an incredible feeling."

Springer has now slugged twenty-three post-season home runs, ranking him third all-time behind Ramirez (29) and Jose Altuve (27).

"I can't think of another player on planet Earth that I'd prefer in that moment besides Springer with his October magic," remarked manager John Schneider.

The Mariners, who had led the series 2-0 and 3-2, continue to be the one club never to appear in a championship series.

Manager Dan Wilson stated "certainly that it hurts" following his side's defeat at their home ballpark, but commended their efforts in the campaign.

"It's a special team. Sadly that we finished on the unsuccessful side of this game," he continued.

Toronto's team claimed the title on each of their earlier trips in the early 90s, and will welcome the Dodgers in the first game on this Friday.
