Three-time National Basketball Association Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokic suffered a "gut-wrenching" knee injury when the Denver Nuggets were defeated by a score of 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt towards the end of the second quarter following an accidental collision with teammate Spencer Jones.

The other player stepped on the foot of the MVP, who promptly fell to the floor clutching his leg.

The star, who tops the NBA this season in rebounds and dimes, posted a score of 21 points and eight assists in the contest before suffering the setback.

He is scheduled for an scan on the following day to evaluate the extent of the issue.

"Right away, he understood there was a problem," commented Denver coach David Adelman.

"This is part of the NBA. Whoever that is injured, it's tough to see, most notably somebody as talented as him. We will know more tomorrow."

"We will continue as a team. Obviously, currently, I'm more worried primarily about him as a person and the disappointment of going through an event like that."
