This Limited-Edition Pokémon Card Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Resellers

Marking the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique partnership is underway. Pokémon's creators alongside London's Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop featuring exclusive merchandise. Enthusiasts will find offerings including stationery, plushes, and artwork all inspired by the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, however, will be a specially made Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. This shop is scheduled both the physical location to its web counterpart between late January and mid-April.

Pokécology That Inspires the Collaboration

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a highly anticipated tome packed with beautiful illustrations depicting Pokémon in their wild environments. It's essentially like what an in-world scientist could produce after adventurers provide field notes, alternatively a naturalist's journal might have created had the famous islands teemed with flying-types instead of finches. Part of the charm stems from the book's scholarly approach, presenting Pokémon as worthy of subject for study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara together with artist Chihiro Kinoshita both hold doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

Why This Special Card Different

It is common for The Pokémon Company special edition promos celebrating major tournaments or crossover partnerships. Many such promotional cards typically highlight the iconic electric rodent that acts as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new promotion apart is its unusually large dimensions. Although exact measurements have not been publicly disclosed, its distribution will certainly be strictly limited, and customers able to get just one card with each transaction.

Curbing Reseller Interest

According to an official announcement, some of the merchandise will also be sold beyond the museum walls. However, a wider release will only be specific stores in the UK. Critically, collectors will not be able to purchase the card through the official web shop. Although reseller interest is a given, it appears they will have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities on this occasion. If you're feeling left out, there is an alternative like fossil-themed display headed to Chicago later this year.

"Every penny from purchases made in the museum store and its web shop, which covers these items, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. That encompasses the research of hundreds of researchers who are scientific inquiry and finding solutions to the global ecological crisis," it says.
