New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife just had a child.

“My initial concern, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while working his way back.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in March.
