England to Begin Euro 2028 Quest at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium
England’s men’s team will embark on their 2028 European Championship campaign at the Etihad Stadium, on the condition that they secure the expected entry for a championship taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an English men’s game since the spring of 2016, when Turkey were overcome 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is almost certain to host the Three Lions for their first match on June 10, 2028.
England are planned to play their concluding group fixtures at Wembley, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would occur at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean commencing the knockouts at Everton’s ground.
Competition Kickoff and Protest
The championship was unveiled at an event in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Key representatives from the tournament organizers and the host football associations were confronted as they arrived the location by around fifty protesters, who demanded Israel’s national side to be removed from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Banners were held up with messages reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Schedule
The inaugural fixture of the European Championship will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in the Welsh capital, on Friday 9 June, a match that will involve Wales if they secure a place.
Wembley will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be played on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at 5pm.
It is hoped that an earlier kick-off, which will also be adopted for Champions League finals from next season, will attract households and help engage a more diverse set of audiences.
Qualifying Teams
The Irish team are set to play their first game at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would follow suit at the national stadium of Scotland.
The national sides of all four hosts will enter the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be set aside for any that do not reach the tournament through that route.
Locations and Knockout Stage
Aston Villa’s stadium and The North London arena complete the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be held in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the Belfast stadium could not be renovated in time, on December 6, 2026.
Leadership Comment
“The event will be a competition for the supporters and a festival of everything we love about the game – its emotion and capacity to bring people together.”
Over 3 million passes, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are expected to be offered to attendees.
