Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, most notably the pastel suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
