Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He shouted out the fans who discovered the show and supported its peculiarly charming style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. It offers something deeply soothing about observing this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well be part of that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
